Harry Mayer Clothiers was founded by the
late Harry Mayer, Sr. in 1972, who emigrated to this country in 1937.
The senior Mayer was a great poker player. Every Tuesday night he and a
group of friends would gather to play a game. When Mayer would bluff
someone out of a pot, which he often did, he would sit back, tap his
fingers together and say, "You've got to know your customers."
He ran his business the same way. He knew his customers - their likes,
their dislikes, their sizes.
Upon his death in 1981 his son, Harry
Mayer, Jr. took over the business and continues to operate with the same
philosophy. "It is more important than ever to know your customers
right now.", Mayer, Jr. says. "Once we get a customer who
shops our store we try to put a warm blanket around him to keep him as
our customer. The other folks can't give the service we try to
give."
Harry Mayer Clothiers remains strong
today because his competitors simply cannot compete with him in the
field of service.
Harry Mayer, Jr. always knew he was
destined for the men's clothing business. He was 13 when his father
opened the store and age 20 when he joined the company full time after
working in the summer previous years. He goes to market five times a
year to buy merchandise. His time is spent at the store or with his
family. He is married and has two girls. "I love what I do.",
says Mayer. "I always tell people that if I had to do something
else I would have had to get a paper route because this business is all
I know." Harry Mayer Clothiers is truly one of the last of the
great customer service stores.
