Meridian, Miss. The Mt. Bethel Church in Meridian is opening its doors in an effort to be a home for local children.
Nearly 50 children showed up at the church for today's "Youth Explosion." The church brought in speakers from the Sheriff's Department and the Fire Department, along with praise dancers, performers and plenty of games for the kids. Organizers say the idea is to provide a place for kids to feel safe and loved.
"The main goal is another church reaching out to our community," youth director Sonya Scarbrough says. "We may be a small church, but we have a big heart. We want everyone to know that you have a place to go. You don't have to go to this block or this block. A church is a way of basing them, to let them know that they have a home and we care for them. "
This is the second "Youth Explosion," and organizers say they're looking forward to making this an annual event.
