South Harbor Benefit Concert Approaching

For the past couple of weeks, volunteers have been practicing at Evangel Temple for the benefit concert scheduled for this Friday evening. Nearly 100 people will be singing at the event and they say it such an important cause that they are even purchasing tickets themselves to help ensure the shelter stays open.

"We're in a terrible situation in time right now with the shelter," concert promoter Terrence Davis says. "And we want more people to be open and giving to help this community shelter stay open. And it's really important because of the service it renders to people. And it helps the community as well."

"We realize that the shelter is a vital part of this community," Gloria Christian says. "It's there to help those that are in need. Life happens to all of us and many of us are maybe a week or month away from the shelter, except for the grace of God."

Every dollar will count as far as fundraising is concerned. South Harbor Shelter Director Linda Jones told Newscenter 11 last month the shelter was short about $85,000 in its budget and at the time was operating off of donations. Jones also told us the shelter typically receives $75,000 in grant money each year, but she's not sure that will be offered next year. That's why concert organizers hope everyone will buy a ticket and come to the concert at Evangel Temple on Friday.

"This has such an impact on this community," Evangel Temple Associate Pastor Kim Culpepper says. "Everybody knows somebody that has been impacted by this ministry. And that's why it is so important for us locally to step up and to man up."

The concert will feature gospel artists Byron Cage and David and the Giants. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. The concert begins at 7 p.m. this Friday at Evangel Temple in Meridian.
