Governor Bryant, MS Office of Homeland Security Announce Innovative Cybersecurity Partnership for Students
Online cybersecurity training offers scholarship opportunities for Mississippi high school girls.
Jackson, MS. - Governor Phil Bryant announced Friday a new, innovative cybersecurity training partnership between the SANS Institute and the State of Mississippi called GirlsGoCyberStart. This training is a free online game where every Mississippi high school girl can discover her talents in cybersecurity and learn about the field.
"Cybersecurity is the new frontier for protecting infrastructure, personal information and financial data. Mississippi needs a pipeline of talented cybersecurity professionals to help protect our way of life." said Governor Phil Bryant. "I am excited that Mississippi is able to bring this type of training to our high school girls and encourage them to explore this cutting edge field."
Participants do not need prior cybersecurity knowledge and can come from grades 9 through 12. Students from Mississippi who excel in the GirlsGoCyberStart game will have the opportunity to win prizes including: Dell Chromebooks, Raspberry Pi computers and other cool techie things as well as gift certificates. Each member of the top teams, nationally, will win all expense paid trips to the Women in CyberSecurity Conference (WiCyS) in Chicago along with a parent for each winner.
In addition, the three schools in the state that have the most participants will win awards of $2,500, $1,500 and $1,000.
"The GirlsGoCyberStart program is an excellent and fun opportunity for students who think they may be interested in cybersecurity to determine if they have the passion and aptitude to pursue it as a career,” said Governor Bryant. “I hope young people all across the state take advantage of this great opportunity.”
Each player in GirlsGoCyberStart begins as a “cyber protection agent" responsible for protecting an important operational base. The student chooses and solves challenges, earning points along the way. A cyber protection agent field manual provides answers to questions that may arise and hints help when players get stuck. When the player has solved a sufficient number of challenges at one level, a new level opens up and new challenges appear - for a total of 31 levels. Students may participate from home or from school.
When asked why SANS is making this investment, SANS Director of Research, Alan Paller, said "We discovered that those who have mastered the topics taught and measured in the GirlsCyberStart program do far better than others in the advanced cybersecurity courses that prepare the critically needed people. By opening GirlsGoCyberStart to hundreds of thousands of students we may be able to help the nation identify the next generation of talented people who will excel in this critical field.”
Sign-up begins on January 29th and ends on February 14th. Students will play and complete the training from February 20th through February 25th. There is no cost to the students who compete in this game.
An introductory web site with answers to other questions, a fuller description of the game, and sample challenge may be found at: www.girlsgocyberstart.com

AmeriCorps NCCC Team Assists with Veteran Home Repair
MERIDIAN, Miss. – An AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) team, Delta Five, is serving with Lauderdale County Habitat for Humanity (LCHFH) in Meridian, Mississippi, for four weeks. The NCCC team of 10 members from the AmeriCorps NCCC Southern Region campus in Vicksburg, Mississippi, is working to assist in repairing and remodeling veterans’ homes.

The team is helping LCHFH assist veteran homeowners who struggle to maintain their homes. The team is there to do exterior home repair services, such as painting, minor exterior repairs, landscaping and exterior clean-up as well as extensive interior or exterior work to alleviate critical health, weatherizing, life and safety issues or code violations for the veterans.

“It is cool to give back to people who have given so much for us. My grandpa is a veteran as well, so it is awesome to help people who have been through the same things as him,” says team member Ashley Kallhoff, from Salem, Oregon.

Habitat for Humanity’s vision is having a world where everyone has a decent place to live. They build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter. Their goal for the program is to assist those who need weatherization or critical repair by helping low-income veteran families in their community have safer homes to live.

AmeriCorps NCCC’s mission is to strengthen communities and develop leaders through direct, team-based national and community service. In partnership with non-profits (secular and faith based), local municipalities, state governments, federal government, national and state parks, Indian tribes, and schools, members complete service projects throughout the region they are assigned.

The NCCC team is based out of Vicksburg, Mississippi, but consists of members from around the country. After completing their service in Meridian, Mississippi, the members of the team will travel back to Vicksburg and remain there for several days before deploying to their next service project.

(MORA) has announced that the agency’s 2018 scholarship application process is now open

Event Dates and Times

Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency (MORA) has announced that the agency’s 2018 scholarship application process is now open. For the fourth straight year, MORA will present $6,500 in scholarships in May to high school seniors who understand the need for organ, eye and tissue donation in Mississippi and across the country.
Eleven $500 scholarships will be awarded in the spring, as well as a $1,000 Gift of Life scholarship, that will go to the top student applicant.
After a record number of applicants (265) from a record number of high schools (94) in 2017, MORA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Kevin Stump, expects the list of applicants to be even higher this year. “We have seen interest in donation rise among young people through the recent years,” said Stump, who is in his 24th year as the agency’s CEO. “We feel this is because either a young person has been touched by donation through a personal experience or that they are becoming educated about the need of the lifesaving gifts of donation,” Stump added.
Seniors applying for the MORA scholarships must meet certain criteria. First, they must be a graduating senior from an accredited Mississippi high school. Those seniors must also must have been accepted by a community college or university in Mississippi, or have intentions of 2018 fall enrollment. They must also have a grade point average of 2.5 or above, include two letters of recommendation one from a teacher and one from an adult of the student’s choice and include an essay of 300 to a maximum of 750 words about their connection to donation, why they are registered donors or the importance of encouraging others to be donors.
For more information concerning these scholarships, you can contact Susan Bonds, Community Outreach Coordinator, via email at sbonds@msora.org or by phone at 662-841-1960.
Applications must be postmarked or hand delivered no later than Wednesday, February 14, 2018 to:
