Saturday was a big day for a small town in Newton County. The town of Hickory turned 150 years old this year.
Saturday marked Hickory Day. This is a tradition in the town that has been going on for more than 20 years. It's also a fundraiser for the Hickory Fire Department.
Organizers say it's a time for all of the kids and adults of Hickory to celebrate together.
"It was organized 1860 and this is 2010 so that gives us 150 years. I was privileged to give the history of Hickory today with the help of my dear friend Olive Meaders and a number of the senior citizens of Hickory to tell the story," exclaims Jo Gilmore Veenstra, one of the organizers of Hickory Day.
Members of the Hickory Fire Department presented Mrs. Olive Meaders with a plaque for all of her years of service and dedication to the town of Hickory. Hickory Day started at 9a.m. and lasted until 2p.m.
