Volunteers Needed in California

In 2005, it was Hurricane Katrina that devastated south Mississippi and Louisiana. Now it's massive wildfires running across California.

Residents of Mississippi and Alabama are being asked to step up and help out west. If you can give three weeks of your time and train in the next two days, there is plenty of volunteer work for you in California.

"I think any time we suffer a bad event like Katrina, or the wildfires, and we tend to reflect, we know how they feel and what their needs are," said Gordon Stewart of the American Red Cross Key Chapter in Meridian. "We are there to support them in volunteer efforts and individually."

Stewart said many people have called his office asking to volunteer, and the need is there. He said the Red Cross can point you in the right direction.

The Key Chapter will hold training sessions Thursday and Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Those trained will be sent to Los Angeles, San Diego or San Bernardino to work in shelters.

There is also a great need for money. You may donate to the wildfire effort by calling 1-800-redcross, or by visiting www.redcross.org.
