Friday marked the nationwide kickoff of the U.S. Marines' annual Toys for Tots campaign, to provide Christmas toys for underprivileged children.
Marines volunteer at stores around Meridian, accepting new toys that will be distributed later to children who otherwise might not get a Christmas gift.
Marines from NAS Meridian do this every year. They say it's a great chance to participate personally in making children happy.
"There's a lot of needy children, and sometimes we don't take the time to think about them," said Marine Sgt. Antonio D. Ferguson. "And what better time to do it than Christmas? There's a lot of needy kids."
Toys for Tots drop-off locations are both Wal-Mart Supercenters in Meridian, Big Lots, Sam's Club, both Family Dollar stores, and Geoffrey. The campaign continues until Dec. 16.
