A new unit for those trying to battle back from mental health issues is now open in Meridian.

The ribbon was cut and an open house was held Thursday for the relocated Friendship Center.

The center is a place for mentally ill adults who live in group homes, homeless shelters, and the community. It allows them to access important information to help them deal with their health issues.

"This expansion was very much needed," said Larry McKnight, assistant director of East Mississippi State Hospital. "This building allows for us to expand our services, and also allows us to better programming for our clients."

The new Friendship Center is open at the former site of the Seventh Day Adventist Church school on North Hills Street.
