Carousel Enthusiasts Visit Meridian

The National Carousel Association took a field trip to Meridian Tuesday. The carousel enthusiasts, who are having their annual convention in Memphis, wanted to visit the Gustav Dentzel-designed carousel at Highland Park.

"This is our 35th year of doing this. And when we started there were many more," said Bette Largent of the National Carousel Association. "And there's only about 150 of the antique classically-carved carousels remaining in the United States."

"Oh, I share this with 20,000-25,000 visitors a year," said Veronica Vandenbout of the Merry-Go-Round Museum in Sandusky, Ohio. "We get to tell them about all the different carousels in the country; that 250 some are still operating, historic machines, where they're located and we encourage visitors to stop at other carousels, other than our own."

The association also plans to visit carousels in Little Rock and St. Louis, as well as one in Memphis that is currently closed and looking for a new home.
