Mayor Cheri Barry issued a proclamation for Breast Cancer Awareness Month Thursday.

She read the proclamation to the breast cancer support group, CAREousel, at Dumont Plaza.

Members of the group stress that no one has to go through a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment alone.

"It's a difficult situation to go through, not only for the patient but for the family. It's a major lifestyle change and an individual just needs the support to know that they can get through this," said Dr. Robert Berg, surgeon and facilitator for CAREousel. "And that's what these ladies are here for. The ones who have survived many years can help those who are going through the journey and answer those questions for them."

Berg says breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer in women and the second leading cause of non-skin-related cancer in the United States.

But because of early detection, the survival rate is above 90 percent.
