The city of Meridian is celebrating a major milestone. That's because Wednesday marked its 150th birthday.
Feb. 10, 1860, legislation was signed declaring Meridian a city. In honor of this, a big birthday bash was held at Dumont Plaza.
City officials say the celebrations will continue.
"Today is the kickoff of celebrating events at least through the rest of the year, to let everybody learn the history of Meridian and to celebrate the fact that we're here for 150 years and still growing," said Connie Royal, cultural affairs coordinator.
As part of the festivities, later this month an auction of old photos of Meridian will be held. There will also be events marking the anniversary at the Threefoot Arts Festival in April and at a special air show in May.
