Sucarnochee Revue Returns to UWA

The nationally syndicated radio program, The Sucarnochee Revue, takes the stage Friday, Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. for a live taping at Bibb Graves Auditorium at The University of West Alabama.

The show introduces radio listeners in Alabama, Mississippi, and other parts of the nation to the artistic community of performers from the Black Belt region.

The Sucarnochee Revue, sponsored by UWA and Weyerhaeuser Company, can be heard on radio stations across the country.

Now in its fourth year of production, The Sucarnochee Revue presents authentic Black Belt music. The show not only preserves original music and the works by original artists, but also captures the evolution of that music and its current generation of performers.

“What surprises people about the show is the fantastic range of musical genres,” producer and host Jacky Jack White said. “We have blues, jazz, Dixieland, gospel, bluegrass, classical, country and more. Historically, there is an incredible amount of talent in the area.”

The August show will feature gospel group The Decatur Street Boys; folk/blues singer Debbie Davis; The Kudzu String Band, a musical comedy group; R&B artist Frank Rogers; the 5th Alabama Infantry Regiment Band, a Civil War orchestra; contemporary Christian artist Donna Harper; and the Sumter County Community Singers, led by John Brown.

The Sucarnochee Revue regulars will round out the show. The regulars include Revue producer and host Jacky Jack White, J. Burton Fuller, Britt Gully, Track 45, and Mississippi Chris Sharp and the Jangalang String Band.

The radio show will go on the road this fall, with performances at Tuscaloosa’s Bama Theatre on Oct. 26 and Meridian’s MSU Riley Center on Nov. 2-3. The Sucarnochee Revue will return to UWA on Sept. 21 and Oct. 19.

General admission to The Sucarnochee Revue is $5. For more information, contact White at 205-652-6680.
