American Red Cross Prepares for Isaac

"Our job here is to prepare for the worst and obviously pray for the best, and that's exactly what we're doing."

Governor Phil Bryant made those remarks earlier Friday as the state begins making preparations for Isaac. Here at home, the Key Chapter of the American Red Cross is also taking steps to make sure East Mississippi is prepared to handle whatever Isaac sends our way.

Gordon Stewart, readiness and response manager for the Red Cross, tells us, "Locally, we're calling all of our local staff and checking their availability for this weekend and into next week. In addition, our emergency response vehicles are on alert, and we have volunteers ready to go and provide that mass care needs with food and water."

As actions are taken by the American Red Cross to open shelters and any alerts that may be coming out, you can actually access those on the go with an app developed by the American Red Cross.

Elizabeth Gibson, a volunteer with the Red Cross, explains some of the features of the app. "Similar tools have been available at that because everybody's on the go now with their tablets and their phones that they can access it wherever they're at. It even has an alarm, a very loud alarm, that you can set to automatically go off just whenever an alert comes in. You definitely know it's a Red Cross warning."

The app is free to download for both Apple and Android powered devices. You can also set up alerts to notify you of warnings or shelter openings for different locations by zip code.
