The Mississippi University for Women hosted an alumni association meeting at Merrehope Wednesday.
The guest speaker was Michael Farris Smith, an associate English professor at MUW. He signed copies of his book 'Rivers'.
Smith says his book has been classified in several different genres. He got inspiration for the fictional work from Hurricane Katrina.
"I kept trying to write a hurricane novel but didn't like fabricating a real-life event that really hurt thousands and thousands of Mississippians," said Smith. "But I just kept thinking about it and eventually I came up with the idea of just creating an alternate reality where a storm like Katrina essentially never ends."
'Rivers' is available at major book chains and online retailers.
