Meridian, Miss. Spring is in the air and so is the smell of barbecue. If you follow your nose you'll end up at Bucky's Sports Bar. There you'll find chicken, ribs, and sausage being barbecued. This delightful smell has a very important purpose besides making you hungry; all the money raised from the barbecue will go towards helping 4 young men in Lauderdale County to attend college.
Derron Radcliff, of Kappa Alpha Psi, says, "It goes to a high school senior. They must have specific grades, must be involved in the community, and more importantly be able to speak and talk in public. So it's kind of like a grooming tool to prepare them for the future. It's for any school of their choice. Once they get the scholarship they can attend any school of their choice."
A lot of work has gone into the barbecue already. With over 500 plates being sold before Friday. But now the event is open to the public to come in and partake in the delicious food that is being prepared.
Radcliff went on to say, "We’ve been working for the last two or three days. We've been barbecuing. We'll get the plates and we've been selling tickets. And then we'll be open to the public today. So basically prepare, and sell, and eat."
This is the 5th year of this fundraising barbecue, and it seems to only grow in popularity each year.
Radcliff says they usually sell out of food by 4 p.m., even though the event goes to 6 p.m. This event is sponsored by the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated.
