Churches, Volunteers Building Independence

Clarke County, Miss. Some local churches are working together to help the disabled have accessibility to their homes.

Members of several local churches have partnered to build ramps for disabled individuals.

More than a dozen of them came together Thursday morning to work on a ramp project in Clarke County.

Organizers say the premise of the ministry is simple, to help the elderly and disabled be able to live in their homes longer.

"What people want to do is stay at home, as long as they possibly can," said Jerry Fox. "Nobody would say, I want to go and put me in a nursing home. They want to stay at home, live at home, and what we do is afford them the means of doing that by giving them accessibility to their homes. "

The ramp ministry is sponsored by the Meridian District of the United Methodist Church, but it includes volunteers from numerous other denominations in this area.
