Meridian's mayor has joined with local school superintendents, Dr. Randy McCoy and Randy Hodges, to encourage parents and other community members to be involved in their local schools.
One way for these citizens to be prepared is participation in Parents for Public Schools' Parent Leadership Institute, set to take place over three weekends in 2011.
Becky Glover with Parents for Public Schools is urging people to apply to be one of the thirty people accepted for the institute. The deadline is Dec. 10.
"It is most important to me that this community and our children get the best possible education they possibly can," said Mayor Barry. "A good education is something no one can ever take away from them. And it will provide a better quality of life for all our children and residents in our city and county. "
The Parents for Public Schools' Parent Leadership Institute is not just for parents of school-age children. Other citizens in east Mississippi are also invited to get involved.
The Parent Leadership Institute, set to begin in February, seeks to provide parents with the skills to help their children and their schools excel.
The institute is set for Feb. 4-5, March 4-5, and April 1-2 at the Meridian District Office of the United Methodist Church, 6210 Highway 39 North, Meridian.
