Lauderdale County, Miss. A dog in Lauderdale County is being called a hero after alerting a family of a house fire.
Lost Gap, Suqualena, and South volunteer fire departments were called out to the fire on Old 8th Street Road North around 3:30 a.m.
The dog, Hershey, woke up the residents and two children and an adult who lived there were able to escape without being harmed.
"I'm not sure they would have been alerted," said Allan Dover, Lauderdale County fire coordinator. "So I credit that all three of these persons were saved by this dog."
When the residents escaped, Hershey was still inside the house. A firefighter ran back in and found the dog in respiratory distress.
Metro Ambulance gave him oxygen, and he was able to recover. Hershey returned from the veterinarian's office Wednesday afternoon in good health and spirits.
