It has become a staple for thousands of Meridianites each year. The annual celebration at Bonita Lakes will be full of activities, but if you want an early seat around the upper lake, with most of the activities around the boat ramp, you will need to wait until the afternoon to get it.
Casey Null, Cultural Affairs Coordinator for the city tells us that, "the gates at the upper lake will open at 3:30pm, and so the festivities will actually kick off at 6:45. We'll have a flyover by NAS Meridian, and we have two pilots that are going to join us for that, and then we will have Track 45 sing the national anthem; the boy scouts are going to present the colors for us, and then we have a group from Jackson coming in called 'The Love Notes,' and they are going to be the entertainment for the night."
With a large amount of people expected for the festivities on July 4th, parking becomes a concern, but officials are encouraging those who wish to park outside of Bonita Lakes to park around Bonita Lakes Circle near the mall, specifically by JoAnn Fabrics, and the city will provide transportation to the lakes.
"Park in that area, get on the trolley, and they will actually bring them over to Bonita Lakes. So, if they want to park there and then ride over, they can definitely do that as well," says Null.
For those parking in the park, a tram will be provided to drive people across the top of the dam. The city will have a tent by the sound-stage near the boat launch.
"Mayor Cheri Barry will have a tent set up and we will have the city staff here," Null says. "It will be set up just down from the berm by the stage, and she just wants to invite everyone to come out and enjoy."
Fireworks will end the celebration tomorrow night.
