Just in the past week, two individuals were robbed at gunpoint in Meridian. In the wake of this crime, officials are asking citizens to be a little more careful.
It was Thursday night when a male and female were robbed right outside of Meridian's Mount Calvary Baptist Church located at 600 11th Avenue. An unknown suspect stole a purse, a 2005 Nissan Altima, and several cell phones.
According to Assistant Chief Jeff Lewis with the Meridian Police Department, the purse and car have since been found. He says at this time of year, residents need to be more aware of their surroundings.
"Well, this is the time of year you start to see an increase in crimes. Prior to any of your major holidays, you'll see an increase in crime. Hopefully that's not going to be the trend this year. But, it is very likely headed that way," says Chief Lewis.
Chief Lewis says if you are ever faced with a gun, the best thing to do is to comply with the suspect's demands. He says that normally, this will yield the best results.
If you plan on leaving the house for a short time, make sure to lock your doors and windows. If you are going out of town, it is a good idea to make your home looks occupied by keeping your inside and outside lights on. If you are going shopping, you should consider placing items in the trunk of your car.
