Lauderdale County, Miss. Dedication, service, excellence and a love for teaching are all great qualities in a teacher. This year no one exemplified that more than West Lauderdale Middle School teacher Melissa Pogue. She is Lauderdale County Schools' Teacher of the Year.
Pogue's peers as well as a selection committee were the deciding factor in her receiving the award. The 16-year veteran says she wants her students to excel in life, as well as academics.
"Someone recognizes the hard work that we put into being teachers," said Pogue, who teaches 7th grade math. "It's not what oftentimes people consider to be an 8 to 3 job."
Pogue says she lives by the motto, Learners Today, Leaders Tomorrow.
"It is such a privilege to work with the teachers and the staff of West Lauderdale Middle School and I just couldn't be more honored," Pogue said.
A Mississippi Teacher of the Year winner will be named Apr. 11 in Jackson from a field of four finalists. The winner receives $5,000.
