MCCSA Looks to Community for Help

Welcome to MCCSA. The staff is friendly and ready to assist. Colorful fall decorations cover the walls. But not even cheerful employees can hide the building essentially crumbling around them.

"This one has outlived its usefulness," said executive director Callie Cole. "We want clients to be comfortable. The heating system doesn't work half the time. Neither does the air."

And every time it rains, employees have to move around computers as the building is prone to leaks.

"This is our tax preparation room. We have to move the computers out and put the coolers in to collect the water," said executive assistant Mary Atterberry.

The windows in offices are covered with plastic to keep out either the summer heat or winter cold. Tarps cover desks. And rain leaks in so often you can see the tracks on the walls.

The good news is that the agency is on its way to getting a new building, but your help is needed.

"We have to raise around $700,000 as a match," said Cole. "We have received the grant. The county applied for a grant for us that was approved but we have to have a cash match."

The building will be constructed on property adjacent to the current building. As for the agencies continued client support, Cole says grants have been awarded for that work. But the money can only be used for clients and not for building improvements.

"It will take more to bring this building up to standard than it would to build a new one," Cole said.

And with the public's help that will happen soon.

MCCSA is hosting a special fundraiser in two weeks, called Dancing Like the Stars, a dance contest modeled after the popular ABC show, Dancing with the Stars.

Dancing Like the Stars will be Friday, Nov. 12, starting at 7 p.m. at the Frank Cochran Center. Tickets are $50 each. Contact Mary Atterberry at 601-938-2773.
