His name is Kevin Lewis, but everyone calls him 'Jenkins'. For the last 27 years, he has been right here at his barber shop on 5th Street in Meridian, cutting hair and holding court.

"A lot of guys come around just for the conversation, have a good time, talk about sports, politics, and all the rest of the good stuff," Lewis said.

But it's what he does when working hours are over that has earned his reputation as a pillar of the community. The walls at his barber shop tell it all.

Lewis has been coaching kids in basketball for years, and has the pictures and the trophies to prove it.

He has also worked with the Adopt-A-School program at T.J. Harris Elementary School, and Big Brothers-Big Sisters. He says he just loves kids.

"We can help kids out. Love the kids, always love the kids," Lewis said.

But his giving to the community doesn't stop there.
Lewis also worked very hard to give back to the people who live around his shop. He has been known to pull out the grill or the fish fryer and serve meals to everyone for free. His customers say it's obvious how much he cares.

"He likes to give back to the community, and that's a good thing," said friend and customer Ronnie Shack. "That's a good thing. And he's a godly man; he's a family man. That's a good thing."

At then end of the day, Lewis says it's his faith that motivates him to give back to the community.

"Somebody's got to give back," he said. "The good book says more is given, more is required. I've been given a lot. I've got to give back."

So he continues to give back, while also giving a good hair cut.
