Red Cross in Storm-Ravaged Communities


The American Red Cross says it has over 200 workers
on the ground in Mississippi, as cleanup from multiple tornadoes continues this week.

It says twelve emergency vehicles are traveling through communities to deliver supplies such as rakes, shovels, trash bags and gloves to individuals and families picking up the pieces of their homes.

Two emergency aid stations remain open:

• Highlands Mobile Home Community, 3127 Greenfield, Pearl, Miss.

• Center Ridge Baptist Church, 4019 Highway 15 South, Louisville, Miss.

In Tupelo, free tetanus shots will be given by the Tupelo Health Department at the St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 1400 Clayton Ave.

FEMA is hosting One Stop Shops for families and individuals affected. The American Red Cross will also have staff on site to answer questions about Red Cross services. Locations include:

• Georgia Pacific, 826 S. Church, Louisville, Miss.

• Old Tupelo Water and Light Building, 320 Court Street, Tupelo, Miss.

• Auburn Baptist Church, 1138 Country Road 931, Tupelo, Miss.

• Mantachie Convention Center, 265 Thistomee Drive, Mantachie, Miss.

• New Hope Convention Center, 381 Stadium Road, Columbus, Miss.

• Rankin County Office, 601 Marquette Road, Brandon, Miss.

Three Shelter locations are currently open and providing families and individuals affected with a warm meal to eat and a safe place to stay. Locations include:

• Louisville, Miss. – First Baptist Church

• Pearl, Miss. – Mount Elam Missionary Baptist Church

NOTE: The Pearl location will close as a shelter effective 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 6. It will then serve as a distribution center for bulk supplies.

• Tupelo, Miss. – Bancorp South Center

Those who would like to help people affected by disasters like tornadoes, floods and other crises can make a donation to American Red Cross Disaster Relief. People may donate by calling 1-800-RED CROSS or texting the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation, or visiting the Red Cross website. A link is provided. These donations enable the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from disasters big and small.
