Meridian, Miss. Safety was the number one topic Wednesday at T.J. Harris Elementary School.
Mississippi Department of Transportation, Meridian city officials, along with school officials, were on hand to accept tools to enhance safety routes to school.
Ward 4 councilwoman, Kim Houston, says this is just one step in the Safe Routes to School program.
"This part of it is the stop signs, the slowdown cones, those things we need to make sure that when children are walking, they are getting here safely," said Houston.
The infrastructure work is also underway, funded by an MDOT grant.
Houston says she is planning another 'walk to school day' soon, to help encourage children who live close enough to campus to walk to school.
