Vans, SUV's, Trucks. Automobile owners of all types filled interstates across the country and here locally. The holiday season typically means an increase in travelers.

Triple A predicts the number of Americans traveling this week for Thanksgiving will rise 11.4% from last year. That means roughly 42.2 million travelers will be on the roads for trips of at least 50 miles from home. With all of these drivers out, Sheriff Sollie says safety should always come first.

"We strongly encourage everyone to buckle up for safety throughout the holiday periods, as well as any other day. We also encourage everyone to monitor their speed as speed enforcement will be heightened this weekend because of safety issues that the highway patrol has," says Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie.

Most of the trips for this holiday season will be undertaken by some kind of automobile. In fact, 94% of those traveling will do so in that manner. In order to stay focused on the winding roads and long journey of interstates ahead, Sheriff Sollie says you must cut out any unnecessary distractions.

"Again, we've got to remind everybody about the cell phone use and texting, and talking on the cell phones. We strongly encourage individuals that they must talk to use an ear bud system or a hard wire system or wireless ear bud if they must communicate while they are driving."

The day before Thanksgiving, the actual day of Thanksgiving, and the Sunday after the holiday are all busy travel days. There are certain actions you can take to ensure safety during those days.

"We just encourage folks to leave a little bit earlier than usual and monitor their speed," says Sheriff Sollie.

According to Triple A, air travel is expected to rise by 3.5%.
