Wicker Talks Jobs, Senate Race during Meridian Visit

Meridian, Miss. Mississippi U.S. Senator Roger Wicker made a stop in the Queen City on Friday to tour a local business.

Senator Wicker toured Mitchell Distributing on 49th Avenue Friday afternoon. Wicker says this is the time of year when he visits small businesses and learns about the issues that are specific to them. After all, Wicker says small businesses like Mitchell Distributing create a majority of jobs.

"We're always glad when a big plant comes in, like a Nissan or a Toyota or a Yokohama," Senator Wicker says. "But most of the jobs in Mississippi, most of the jobs in America, are created just like we're seeing today. 50 at a time, 100 at a time, through small businesses."

Manny Mitchell is CEO of Mitchell Companies and says having leaders like Senator Wicker visit allows for him to keep the lines of communication open.

"Yeah, it's important," Mitchell says. "I mean, regulation has become such a big part of business, unpleasant part of business. So, we have to keep talking to the regulators, so that we can be heard on the issues and not get run over by well-intentioned laws."

But during his visit, Senator Wicker was hit with questions about the Cochran-McDaniel Senate race. Wicker says the Republican party is in a state where there are a lot of wounds and he says it's time to heal those wounds.

"I think we're getting to the point now where the parties will be in a court of law," Wicker feels. "And a court will dispose of this one way or the other soon. I think Senator Cochran will win that case. But now that it's going to be in court, I sort of see the light at the end of the tunnel."

Senator Wicker says resolving this issue will allow the focus to shift to changing the leadership in Washington, D.C.
