Bed Bath and Beyond closing in Meridian

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - A longtime staple at the Meridian Crossroads shopping center will soon be shutting its doors.

Shoppers at Bed Bath and Beyond were greeted Thursday by a giant sign announcing the store's upcoming closure.

"I did not know it until y'all told me!" shopper Dorothy Hendley exclaims. "This is my favorite store in Meridian. I shop here all the time, and oh, I'm going to be so sad!"

Every shopper Newscenter 11 spoke to said they were disappointed to hear the news.

"They have a lot of great things in here, and personality of the employees is very good, so I enjoy coming even just to look if not shop," shopper Gwen Harris says.

Bed Bath and Beyond's CEO said this summer he was debating closing 80 to 100 stores after in-store sales dipped nationally. This decision leaves many wondering where to go now. Some customers say they'll take their business out of Meridian.

"I reckon (I'll go to) Hattiesburg," shopper Patsy Howze says. "That's the next closest to me because Laurel doesn't have one of them."

The retailer hasn't said when their last day will be, but customers tell us employees believe the doors could officially be closed by mid-January.
