ENTERPRISE, Miss. (WTOK) A church in Clarke County has suffered major structural damage after an 18-wheeler crashed into it Tuesday afternoon.

It happened at the Living Church of God in Enterprise near the intersection of Church Street and Highway 513 around 3:20 Tuesday afternoon.

Enterprise Police Chief Joey Moulds said the driver, Deandre Smith, avoided a major tragedy by steering away from school traffic that had the road in front of him blocked when he was unable to stop in time.

"Thank goodness for him and the Lord that he was able to dodge all of the traffic to keep from hitting the children," said Moulds.

Smith had to make that decision in a split second because 18-wheelers cannot stop as quickly as a passenger vehicle might.

Clarke County Chief Deputy Barry White says no one was injured, but traffic was backed up in that area for a while.

“It was a miracle and great driving on his part and I believe this young man needs some kind of certificate or recognition for what he did in not causing any injuries,” said Moulds.

Smith's family, the church, and the rescue crew gathered in a circle afterward to offer a prayer of thanks that no one was hurt.
