Harper: Cochran valuable to our state

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Mississippi Congressman Gregg Harper made a stop at Meridian Community College Tuesday. He was there to speak to students from MCC's Honors College. While there he also talked with Newscenter 11 about Senator Thad Cochran's illness. The long time Republican Senator from Mississippi has been absent from Washington for a month due to a urinary tract infection. Harper says he's hopeful that Cochran will soon return to Congress.

"There's nobody that's more valuable to our state right now," says Harper. "With him being the chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, what that means to Mississippi can't really be measured."

Senator Cochran's vote could be critical to a budget resolution vote that's expected to take place later this week on Thursday or Friday. That resolution would allow republicans to pass tax reform with 51 votes instead of the 60 votes that are usually needed to pass major legislation.
