Fire destroys church in the Lost Gap community

LOST GAP, Miss. (WTOK) - An awful situation for members of the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church. The congregation lost their house of worship this afternoon.

Firefighters responded to the blaze around 4 this afternoon in the Lost Gap community. The building was engulfed in flames and is a complete loss. We talked to the pastor who's been at the church for nearly 19 years. Thomas Howell recounts when he received that terrible call.

"One of the officers called me around 4 o'clock saying that it was a fire at the church and I asked how bad and he said pretty bad and I came straight up, and they've been fighting ever since," Howell says.

"Thanks to the community, thanks also to the firefighters from all the fire department that came and took the time out of their schedule to come out and fight the fire. We thank them for it," Howell says.

First-responders were on scene for over three hours trying to contain the fire.

At this time, Howell just asks for the communities prayers as they endure this tragedy.

Fire officials say they believe something electrical started the fire, but they will investigate the specific cause.
