MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - In the latest First Responder Series, we highlight someone who deals with gang members and other street crimes, Tenesia Evans.
With problems such as drugs, guns and gangs on the streets of meridian, there are a few officers dedicated to tracking it all down. Detective Tenesia Evans is one of those officers.
"It's something different every day. One day, at one moment it can be slow, the next minute it could be fast-paced,” Evans says.
Working as a part of the Gang Unit, Evans says she deals with many aspects of crime.
"We try to identify gang members, who they're associated with and who they're rival gangs might be,” Evans says.
Evans says she has been in law enforcement for a total of 10 years. She's been with the meridian police department for three. Being a female in a business that's majority men, Evans says it's not a big deal.
"It’s really no problem. They treat you just like you're one of them, like one of the guys. It is a male dominant profession, but they don't treat me any different," Evans says.
Evans says she sees kids doing things they shouldn't do and shouldn't be a part of. She says we should all come together as a community.
"We have all done things we shouldn't have, but the violence is bad and it's getting worse. We as a community can come together in some kind of way and try to motivate them to do something positive instead of something negative," Evans says.
Tune in every Sunday night at 10:00 p.m. for the latest in our First Responders series.
