First Responders hold charity game to raise money for local Special Olympics

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Local first responders and educators teamed up for a good cause this afternoon.

The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department and the Northeast High School staff held a softball game fundraiser to benefit the next local Special Olympics. Proceeds were raised from students paying one dollar to see their favorite teachers and officers battle it out on the diamond. Supporters of the event says it will benefit the many children who participate in the Special Olympics.

"The athletes, they enjoy having the camaraderie and show of support from the community and law enforcement and other first responders. I just love being able to help," Deputy Kara Clark says.

Today's game served as a kickoff to the fundraiser tournament, set to take place next month. The teachers, however, went home victorious today by the score of 18 to 9.
