First community garden planted at T.J. Harris

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Local students will soon be able to enjoy a new green addition to the city of Meridian.

The city hosted a groundbreaking for the first Community Garden at T.J. Harris Upper Elementary School.

The school partnered with the city to plant the garden. It will have cherry tomatoes, squash, carrots, snap beans and other produce.

School officials say this will help students learn about the environment.

"This event is important to our scholars because they will gain hands-on experience," said Charissa Murphy, elementary teacher at T.J. Harris. "And not only that, they'll be able to see the fruits of their labor. They'll gain knowledge on how to grow their own garden. So we're looking forward to seeing the experience with the children."

Third graders at T.J. Harris will be the keepers of the garden until they graduate.
