Household hazardous waste day set for Saturday

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - This weekend residents in Meridian will have a chance to dispose of household hazardous waste items.

As part of the effort, people who reside in Meridian can take their items that should not be placed in a normal trash can, to the public works complex on 27th Avenue and 3rd Street or to Family Bowl Lanes on North Hills Street.

“A lot of people don’t realize once you pour things into the drains and wells it sometimes runs the risk of them getting into the water table,” explained Odell Hopkins, contract compliance officer with the Solid Waste Division for the City of Meridian. “The next reason is it helps the life span of our landfills.”

Public works officials say when you properly dispose of things such as antifreeze or old tires, it gets rid of the potential health hazards and can help keep the environment healthy.

“A lot of times people go all year and they have absolutely no place or understanding of how to get rid of them,” said Hopkins. “If they get it here, we will even get it out of their cars, help them, and will have people available to make the process very easy for them.”

The times for the drop off locations will be from 8 in the morning on Saturday until two that afternoon.
