Imagination Library hands out 200,000 books

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - The United Way's Imagination Library program passed a major milestone in east Mississippi Tuesday.

Program coordinators handed out their 200,000th book as part of a major celebration. Dolly Parton's Imagination Library program mails books to children monthly, as a way to promote literacy in young children. It's the sixth year for the program here in east Mississippi, and the committee impact coordinator says it has a big impact for kids and parents.

"It's really a special program because the children receive the books in the mail," Kathy Parrish says. "They get to go to the mailbox with mommy and daddy and get the book out, and they really take ownership of that book immediately and immediately learn to love to read."
