Investigators searching for suspect who fired at deputies

LAUDERDALE CO, Miss. (WTOK) - Investigators are working hard to track down Christopher Gibbs. Authorities say he's considered to be armed and dangerous after engaging in a shootout with officers last month. The shooting happened Dec. 29 on Green Hill Road, while East Mississippi Drug Task Force agents were assisting in a burglary investigation.

"While in the course of investigating this burglary, two subjects ran from them," Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun with the Lauderdale Co. Sheriff's Dept. says. "One of those subjects turned and fired at the agents, and they, in turn, fired at that individual."

No one was hurt during that shooting. One suspect was caught, but the other managed to escape. Thanks to help from several witnesses, Calhoun says they were able to identify the missing suspect who shot at officers as Christopher Gibbs.

"He is a 50-year-old black male, who stands approximately 5 feet 9 inches in height, weighing 165 pounds," Calhoun says.

Warrants have been issued for Gibbs' arrest. He's charged with four counts of simple assault on a law enforcement officer, as well as being a felon in possession of a firearm.

"We believe that he has left our area," Calhoun says. "Some of our investigation has led us to believe he might be in the Winston County area or in west Alabama."

Now, they're asking for the public's help in tracking him down. But Calhoun is warning that you should not try to engage him. If you know where he is, you can call the sheriff's department.

"Obviously, when an individual would shoot at multiple officers at the same time, I think you could very easily read into his demeanor," he says. "That is why we would tell people to not approach him, and if they have any information to contact us. "

You can call 855-485-TIPS with any information.
