JACKSON, Miss. (WTOK) - 50-year-old Gregory Donald Myrick, of Laurel, was sentenced to prison for theft of government funds.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says Myrick received a 13-month sentence, followed by three years of supervised release, for taking veterans benefits that were earned by his late-grandfather. Myrick was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $143,106.

Myrick's grandfather, who served in the Army, died in 2008, but Myrick continued to receive the deceased veteran’s checks, which were
electronically deposited into a bank account the two men shared.

From May 2008 through May 2015 Myrick fraudulently received and used the money.
