MFD investigates early morning arson case latest

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Investigators say arson appears to be the cause of a house fire early Thursday morning in Meridian. It happened around 12:30 at 2305 on 15th Street. According to the fire marshal, two people were in the house, and following the blaze they are lucky to be alive.

"They had to go out through a window," says MFD Fire Marshall Jason Collier, "but it's lucky that they were awake. If they hadn't been awake, and if they didn't have smoke alarms, it could've been a different outcome."

Collier says the fire started on the front porch and spread into the attic. He says firefighters helped one of the victims escape through a window; that person suffered scratches and smoke inhalation. The house was heavily damaged by the fire. So far, no arrest has been made in the case.
