MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - The Meridian Fire Department responded to a fire at Diversicare of Meridian on Highway 39 North late Monday night.
Officials with the Meridian Fire Department say there was a small fire in one room that started in the air conditioning unit.. The fire was contained to that room, but smoke did spread to other rooms in the facility.
Firefighters used ventilators to get the smoke out of the building. Firefighters were able to get the fire under control quickly.
"I'm extremely proud of our guys. We made a quick attack," said Wayne Cook, the on-duty battalion chief for MFD. "We were able to start rescue operations and ventilate the building to reduce any property damage and save lives."
Our crew spotted an ambulance taking one person to the hospital, but we don't know why they were taken to the hospital.
Cook says the small fire started in an air conditioning unit.
