MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Tens of thousands of dollars are being poured into a major renovation project in downtown Meridian. Over the next few weeks the Meridian Museum of Art is set to kick off a capitol improvements campaign. The goal will be to raise almost $50,000. Earlier this summer renovations started at the museum. Ultimately, the museum's executive director, Kate Cherry, says the plan is to use almost $100,000 to give the museum a major face-lift that will include a new addition.
"The new addition will be a store inside the museum," says Cherry. "We have our original art plan with jewelry, scarves, paintings, photography; it'll just be all original art. We hope to bring our members in and give them a place to showcase their works that they wish to sell."
The Riley Foundation has already donated roughly $42,000 for the work, and some is being done in-kind. Cherry says the museum is set to re-open for its first exhibit showcase in October. She says this will be followed by a big grand re-opening during the Christmas holiday.
