MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Traffic is heavy in the east Mississippi area. Many people are doing last minute Christmas shopping and others are just passing through.
“This is the first time I’ve been away from home during Christmas, the very first time,” Leo Jones says before boarding a flight to Dallas.
From tonight, all day tomorrow and to Christmas day, Leo Jones along with millions of other people will be taking to the interstates and the skies to visit family this holiday weekend.
"I'm on my way to Dallas to spend Christmas with my daughter and her children. I haven't seen her for a couple of years. I thought it was a good time to go and see them," Jones says.
Flights at Meridian Regional Airport are almost all booked up. People traveling throughout the weekend and after Christmas.
"Our morning flight that leaves at 7:51 has been completely full. We have even had an over sell. With our afternoon flight, we have seen a great increase. Meridian airport’s Lead Station Agent Ty’Mikka Williams says.
Agencies are conducting more patrols and will be doing checkpoints during this busy travel period. Some say they aren't worried about the busy travel time and are looking forward to visiting family.
“I have a grandson that is turning 21 on New Year ’s Day, so I might as well just stay. I was there when he was born and I’ll be there when he turns 21,” Jones says.
