MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Lots of training and a love for running helped an upcoming Meridian senior compete for Team USA in Australia this month.

Malik Gale was one of 3 Mississippians invited to Queensland, Australia to partake in the Down Under sport events. After raising the funds, the 20 hour flight across the ocean, and lots of practice.

The Meridian native came home with three medals, winning two silver for the 200 meter four by four and one bronze in four by one.

“We put in time for all this hard work and I know that now it paid off going to Australia and bringing the medals back home,” explained Malik Gale, who competed in Down Under sports. “It feels great to have them and coming back home and showing everyone I can go out and compete internationally.”

Gale explains this was once-in-a-life time experience.

“We all competed and we beat the other top countries and we brought a trophy back home,” explained Gale, “Due to this everyone was proud of each other competing and then we brought that trophy back home.”

Gale thanks his personal trainer Russell Williams for getting him to the point of competing internationally. He looks forward to running this fall for Meridian High School.
