Meridian officials urge caution during downtown roadwork

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK)- With new roadwork beginning in downtown Meridian this week, city officials are warning you to be careful while driving.

25th Avenue from 4th Street to 6th Street is now closed, along with 5th Street between 25th and 26th avenues. It's part of the Streetscape Enhancement Project being done by the Mississippi Dept. of Transportation. Community Development director Bunky Partridge says drivers should be especially cautious while 22nd Avenue is down to only one lane. Partridge says this Streetscape Enhancement Project is the last portion of all downtown roadwork.

"I'm feeling great, I really am," he laughs. "It's been something. I appreciate the patience of the downtown business owners, and I appreciate the patience of the people who are traveling downtown. I know it's been a mess, but in the end it's going to be good for downtown Meridian."

Partridge says by Jan. 1, all downtown roadwork should be finished.
