Merry Meridian Christmas Parade lights up downtown Meridian

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - A large crowd gathered throughout downtown Meridian to see all the floats and to hear the sounds of the Merry Meridian Christmas Parade.

The theme for the parade this year was "A Christmas Story". Many floats were decorated as different Christmas tales, like A Charlie Brown Christmas and The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.

There were over 75 floats and cars in the parade this year. Laura Carmichael with the city of Meridian says it was great to see everyone come out and enjoy this annual Christmas tradition.

"The parade brings the community together as a whole,” says Carmichael. “It's that time of the year when everyone comes together to enjoy the holidays. It's important for our community, to bring everyone downtown to bring everybody together.”

The parade also had a contest to see who had the best decorated float. The overall winner was SunSouth John Deere.

The city of Meridian released a list of all the winners in each category Monday:

Commercial Division:
Grand Champion - Watchdog Security
1st Place - LaPinata Mexican Restaurant
2nd Place - Suzie McGraw School of Dance
3rd Place - Happy Smiles Dental

Non-Commercial Division:
1st Place - East Mississippi State Hospital
2nd Place – Meridian Group Home
3rd Place – New Fellowship Church

Spirit Award – Boys & Girls Club of East Mississippi

People’s Choice Award – The Meridian Star

The city says next year’s Christmas parade will be Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018.
