New bill would forgive student loans for volunteer first responders

LAUDERDALE CO., Miss. (WTOK) - A bill in the U.S. Senate right now aims to forgive student loans for volunteer first responders.

Senate Bill 2207 is known as the "Volunteer First Responder Loan Forgiveness Act." The bill would allow qualified first responders to have their student loans wiped away after a certain amount of volunteer time. Lauderdale County fire coordinator Allan Dover says the bill sounds great in theory, but he's waiting to learn more about what it would take to qualify.

"It possibly could bring in college students or people that have recently gotten out of college that have incurred a lot of student debt," Dover says. "Until we see the specifics of the bill, we can't really say whether it's going to be a good thing or a bad thing."

He's also hopeful there will be future incentives to help current volunteers continue their education.
