LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Miss (WTOK) - The new year is bringing a change for the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors. During the group's first meeting for the year Tuesday the board voted District 2 Supervisor Wayman Newell in as president. Jonathan Wells from District One was voted in as vice president. As head of the board, Newell says his top priority will be to address concerns about the poor condition of the courthouse.
"To me it's just, 'how much room do we need?'" says Newell. "We'll have to decide whether some are going to stay in the annex building, or are all of us going to move? To me, you need to stay in the (annex) building if you're going to continue to run the lights and so forth, and if you haven't got a buyer."
During the meeting the board approved advertising for bids for property that could be used to temporarily house courthouse business. One site that is being considered is the old JC Penney space at Bonita Lakes Mall. Newell says he wants the board to make a final decision on how to address courthouse concerns soon.
