NEWTON, Miss (WTOK) - More charges are expected to be filed against a Newton man, who is accused of setting his mother's house on fire. That's according to Newton Police Chief Harvey Curry. The fire happened around 8 last Friday night at the house on Oak Street in Newton. Orlando Smith and Kila Ricks are charged with arson and aggravated assault for the incident which happened at Smith's mother's house.
According to Chief Curry, prior to the house fire Smith had been arguing with his mom because he had borrowed her car and she wanted him to return it. Chief Curry says the argument led to the 36-year-old setting the duplex on fire where his mother lived. The home was destroyed by the blaze. According to investigators, no one was seriously hurt.
At this time officers say no other arrests will likely be made in the case. However, they say more assault charges are expected to be filed against both Orlando Smith and Kila Ricks.
