MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Children at Northeast Elementary School received a dose of healthy fun Wednesday as representatives from Rush Hospital conducted a health awareness education program.
The group organized activities like jump rump, hula hoop and dancing as a part of an overall campaign to combat diabetes and heart disease.
Tearrah Conerly of Rush Hospital says it's always good to bring awareness to kids while they're young to prevent some health problems in the future.
"Mississippi is rated number one in obesity and we're high on the map for diabetes, stroke and heart problems," said Conerly. "So we're feeling like if we come into the schools, start at a young age, then hopefully we can prevent some of those problems."
Each student received a bag full of healthy items including water, fruit and toothbrushes.
