MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - If you're an avid listener of Q101, then you might know one of the radio personalities is stepping away from the microphone. Lee Taylor did that Thursday afternoon.
"There have been times on the radio where I thought, this is coming to an end,” Lee “The Lugnut” Taylor Higginbotham says.
If you've listened to music on the radio in Meridian then you recognize the voice. Lee Taylor is ending his nearly 20 year career in radio.
"I do want to be known for who I really am and I don’t feel like radio can give me that opportunity now,” Higginbotham says.
He began at SL100 in Laurel. From there he landed a job at Q101 and began his on-air career as Lee “The Lugnut” playing today’s best music and sacrificing from time to time.
“I wore a bikini on WTOK. A woman’s bikini because I made a bet on the radio,” Higginbotham says.
Through the business of radio, Taylor met his wife. He even proposed to her live on-air in 2002. They have two children. Taylor explains how difficult leaving the mic will be. He says his daughter loved hearing him on the radio.
“She told me that she was going to miss her dad being on the radio,”
Taylor says he knows it’s time to leave the business and has been dealing with this decision for around eight months. He says he will miss it, but it’s time to go.
"I really came to realize that this Lee Taylor persona was not me. God is calling me out of this profession to something new and I had to follow that direction," Higginbotham says.
Taylor will continue announcing West Lauderdale football on Q101 during football season.
